A SP4 Richard Vokes was a victim of a non-combat related intentional homicide on 25 Jul 70 in the My Tho area. His name is also listed on the roster of the

1969 History.

This is a sad chapter in the History of the Swamp Fox. At least some good can come from this information. I have no information on Blackstock and there is no mention of this in the Unit History. Anyone with knowledge of the incident please get back to me so I can inform Richard Vokes relatives.  - Doc

Thank you so much for responding.

My husband is Richard's  brother "Pete".

Do you know anyone in your group who knew Richard?

Also does anyone have pictures of him in Vietnam? (forwarded two pictures, Doc))

Does anyone know the real story how he was shot?

Thanks,

Pete & Shirley Vokes

Hello there,

This was after my time in Vietnam.

Our web site should be of interest.

Regards,

 Ray "Doc" Jennings

Thank you,

It was so wonderful for Pete to see the picture of Richard.

For your records, Richard was shot July 4, 1970.  He passed July 25, 1970.

The family was told that Charles Blackstock shot him in the barracks.

Blackstock was suppose to have been his commanding officer?? (This is erroneous, but cleared up now. Doc)

Blackstock was suppose to have been high on drugs??

Any info you have about his death would be greatly appreciated.  Pete & his sister, Millie, are the only remaining relatives.

The Representative (Jerry Petus) from Calif had been on his way to investigate Richard's death & his plane crashed & he was killed.

From Terry Mathews

Hello,I,m Terry Mathews,Swampfox of 1970. I worked a while with Sp/5 Richard Vokes,And sp/5 Carter, both worked in the Engine Shop,at the airfield, in Vinh Long! Both Pictured below!

I have one more picture of Richard in my files! I can send it too!

I never herd the details concerning Richards conflict with the other Swampfox member,I think he  worked there in Vinh Long,in one of the other Maint. crews. Young Man Named Blackstock, cant recall his first name!

I remember Guarding Blackstock at the Air Field,as he waited for transport to his Court Hearing scheduled in Siagon! I don't remember the times of the incident or what the conflict was about, only that Mr Vokes Died as a result of Gun Shot Wounds some time after the event near or at Dong Tam! I was serving duty in Vinh Long when Mr Vokes was Assaulted!

I havent much memory about Richard, since i didnt work much with him and Mr.Carter! In the Engine shop! 40 years gone by and its hard to recall  much!

From Shirley Vokes

Thank you for the pictures & for the info you have.

The time of his death was when a lot of things were happening in this country too.

His parents just didn't know if they were given the truth & the heart ache of being killed by one of ours was also hard to bare.

Thanks again.

I suspect that as a result of the strife in Volks life in Vinh Long, he was relocated to My Tho/Dong Tam for his own protection.  I heard that the conflict may have been related to a Vietnamese girl friend?  I discovered his death listed in a database that I had access to during my early research.
